    Heya Guys...

Just thaught i'd start a thread that we used to have fairly regularly on the old board, and i always found usefull... i actualy have copys saved on my (old) computer for when i used to get bad. But cant get at those at the moment, so thaught i would try and start a new one online.
So lets see how many distraction techniques we can find and add? Because even if each one doesnt help everyone, people might find some that they have never tried before, and that might make them stop. i know i for one need to find something that can work long term as well as short...

    So, any ideas huns?
    Mine are...

1)Red Pen - draw on area you wished to cut
2)Buterflys - in perminant marker ink a buterfly, and then you are not alowed to kill the buterfly, cos its prety, so you cant damage it in any way.
3)Ice - Instead of anything sharp - although i have found injury is possible with this, so just be carefull. best avoided if you cant trust yourself, or use ice from an icecube, that is rounded, not square/sharp
4)Bouncy ball - amazing fun, and take up alot of attention
5)Screaming very very loud - dont try with people around, its not a good effect

    What do you do?

    love and hugs

elastic band on your wrist, it doesnt leave any permenant damage and gives you the relief you want.

going out for a run or walk, fresh air does us the world of good.

    painting,writting,drawing

writ everything down and rip it up or burn it (do something to get rid of your problems) , its great to tear up your problems.

hope some of these help i know its hard to stop and i've not yet been succesful but i'm sure with some of these distractions on this post we will be able to be well on the way to stopping.

    good luck everyone :) xxxxxx

    42) Try to reduce your cutting by promising to leave some days injury free and keeping to that, slowly making the times and days you cut shorter and shorter
    43) Make a scrapbook
    44) Bandage your arms so you can't cut them - you are taking care of yourself that way
    45) write down your thoughts and change them into positive ones for example ... "I cut 3 times last week, i am a failure" can be changed to ... "I managed 4 days self harm free last week, that is something I can be proud of. I can always improve on this next week" :)

i think this distractions thread should be a green thread at the top because it would help anyone who comes on here! and the person who wrote it [iwishicouldsmile101] had a very good idea putting it here because it was helpful on the old site!!

I find that cutting stuff up helps, for example socks with holes in or empty plastic bottles .

Jen301, did you post that list on the last board? I think I printed it out :)

I find opening up a Word document and typing very fast or 'screaming' into it about anything and everything that is wrong. I have this other site that I go on and go into chat to talk to random people; cheers me up :)

Can't do the whole 'red pen' thing because it triggers me. But listening to music via headphones really, really loudly stops you thinking. Calling a friend and chatting about nothing and making yourself laugh.

I like to paint my nails, something to do and you get something nicce out of it, and it takes time. And I am currently writing a novel and other short stories and poems so I will do that. Or dancing until you are so exhausted you can barely move. Or call a helpline. Or make a list of distractions... peeing an orange peel making sure you get all the zest off. The most random things work :)

As long as you have the determination. Once you get through one, you can get through anything. Take care xx

Thank you Jen301 that list is WAY better than the one my councillor gave me. You have some dedicated typing skills here. I would just have given up :P

i was told to think of an object and find 30 different uses for it :S dunno if that will work though...

(try thinking of 30 uses for an orange-not easy :))

elastic bands are v. helpful!!! :D

I always find something fiddly to do with my hands like making a bead bracelet or making a collage out of some magazines.

Whenever I feel down or want to self harm, I put on Lee Evans or Michael Mcintyre and just lie on my bed. They always make me feel better :)

And you could listen to some bouncy happy music like Mika :)

    found another one,

drywipe marker all over your nails, (making it perfectly even, which is fun)  then rub it off only using your pinky, you have to get it all perfectly off... depending on your pen this gets frustrating if you are not carefull, but its easy to get off with your cuff if it gets to this stage =) alturnatly wipe off the thinest lines you can, like cuts, and see the most little lines you can get on one finger, quite iritiating if it all flakes off towards the bottom!

might not work, but i was doing it today, and it had me occupied for more than half an hour...

    Ive found

    1) drawing on myself helps

    2) drawing something really pretty where i want to cut so i can't cut it without hurting it.

    3) going for a walk

    4)screaming

    5)ripping up paper

6)writing stuff down and then destroying it.

    these all help me.Happy Helping.xx
