She’s not above fancying a bad boy
Lisa’s brief romance with bully Nelson Muntz was inspiring to me, as a nerdy girl. It was nice to know that you could be smart and susceptible to crushes, and that we Lisa-likes weren’t restricted to geeky boys.

When it comes to other women’s woes, she’s empathetic
Bart nearly breaks his teacher Edna Krabapple’s heart when he invents an imaginary boyfriend for her, but Lisa is the one who knows how to let her down gently. She pens the sweetest 'Dear John' letter to preserve Edna’s feelings, which ends: “And any time I hear the wind blow it will whisper the name ‘Edna’.”

Lisa is taken seriously in the man’s world of jazz
Given she’s a pointy haired eight-year-old kid, Lisa has no qualms about working with her jazz heroes and performing with her idol, Bleeding Gums Murphy (in fact, the last thing he does before he dies is to jam with her). Lisa’s saxophone skills and passion for music taught me that loving something is more important than being good at it – even though she’s really, really good at it. She never seems more like herself than when she’s with her sax.
