Hey, Im in year 9 too, and I find it really difficult to make friends, Try to look for a larger group of girls who arn't too close, pick one girl who, maybe, you sit close to in a lesson, or you have mutual friends with. Try to make conversation with this girl, compliment her like 'oh, I like your hair today' but ont suck up to her.
If you chat enough, you will realise you two have stuff in common, you both love chocolate, you both watch X-Factor and want the same people to start a relationship, and the same people to break up, gossip about stuff, but not about her friends, get on her good side.
After a while, you will get along great, ask to sit with her group of friends at lunch, and when you do, chat with people, like 'hey, did you hear that *some no-so-beautiful girl* fancys *the hottest boy evereverever*? How weired!' sometimes you have to step on peoples toes to get what you want.
Enough chatting, and making people laugh, and sharing all of your gossip, and you will be awesome friends, maybe arrange to go shopping, wow them with your amazing sense of style, nod in the direction of hot boys, wave at people {seems odd, but I do this, and it makes people think you have loads of friends, plus, you only waved, they will probably wave back with a 'where do i know her from?' expression} and share your MacDonalds chips with the girl who spent her money on that GEORGEUS dress, and not on her lunch.
This is what worked for me, and I can only cross my fingers and hope it works for you (:

P.S. If it dosen't work, you always have me and 'littlemissbookworm' to turn to with anything you would prefer to share with your school friends (: x
