Firstly, did you say ANYTHING AT ALL about her?Say you said she was slightly annoying at times, and he told her she was very annoying and wish she'd go away. The first comment is still hurtful, but he exaggerated. If you did say something about her, you could send her a letter something like this:
Hi _______,
I'm really sorry that you got upset. I know ________ said I said you were ________. It isn't true, but I won't lie to you because you're my friend. [Name her good qualities] And I'm really, really, sorry, but I did say something about you. I shouldn't have said it behind your back. Please forgive me. But I didn't say what ______ said I did, I said ___________. And I'm really sorry. You're a brilliant friend and I'm sorry. *hugs*

If you didn't, something like:
_______,
I'm so sorry you got upset by what _______ said, but it's not true. I don't know why he did it [if you do, change this bit and say why he did it] but I really did not say that. I don't know if you'll choose to believe me, but I didn't say anything at all. You're my friend, why would I? I mean, everyone makes mistakes, but I didn't. And I don't want you to be upset. You're [name good qualities] and please don't be mad as I didn't say anything.
