Hi there,
Fear of a particular thing or situation is called a phobia. It’s common for people to experience fear of things like spiders, heights, social situations and vomiting. However, a phobia can be about anything at all. Sometimes a phobia can seem silly or strange to others but they are a real source of anxiety for many people.
It’s natural to want to avoid the thing that you’re frightened of, and your fear of ghosts is affecting how you feel about being upstairs alone. Talking about your fear with somebody you trust such as a family member, a friend or trusted adult could help. Writing down your feelings or distracting yourself with music, a book or a game can be a good way of managing your anxiety.
Not everyone will understand your phobia. Some people don’t believe ghosts exist and so it might be hard for someone like that to understand. Whether you believe in ghosts is a personal decision. What's important is that your fear is real, so you should find someone who is willing to listen and take your fear seriously.
When fear and anxiety start to prevent you from doing things you want or need to do, it might be a good idea to talk to your doctor. They might be able to help you some more. Given time, any phobia can be overcome.
Remember that you’re not alone and talking to others with similar fears can help, so take a look at the ChildLine message boards. Remember, you can talk to a ChildLine counsellor any time.
Take care,
Sam
